Modular and Sustainable Haiti Mountain House by NC-office Posted: 27 Apr 2011 07:15 AM PDT Last Haiti’s earthquake should be a very bad disaster, destroyed a lot of buildings. Many people lost their houses. Nowadays, a lot of communities, company, etc try to donate or just share a new concept of house to the victims. One of them is an architectural firm from Miami, NC-office. The architect wants to support the re-development, especially on the relief area, in Haiti. The concept of this sustainable home design is to create a modular house with minimal area needed. A house is formed from four 8 ft x 8 ft modules, which act as a room for each module.  The enclosed area is divided by a bathroom/kitchen core into a sleeping quarter and a living/dining area. A porch is also included in one of the modules. The “L” shape of this sustainable house provide a garden area for the house. The shape also allows the housing unit to be repeated in a small community. The sustainable construction is formed using 4 in x 4 in “H” beam steel, and column. The structure is designed to have good strenght against wind and earthquake. The module is considered to be a rigid box which sits on a series of masonry walls, that compromise the land contour. The exterior skin is from Magnum Board panels. Some windows are provided with special arrangement to provide better view from inside to outside. They are not covered by glass, but using sliding solid panels, mosquito nets, and decorative metal grills for security. To fulfill the energy requirement, the sustainable building design is completed with 1 kW solar system. Water source is from rainwater, which is provided by an integrated rainwater system. The house is also completed with composting unit for the toilet. The area for lumbings, electrical conduits, etc are centralized to minimized the distance, optimizing the system.
